Distant Lights

The two male Tokotas were perfectly content hunting on their own, but found each other's company to be pleasant nonetheless. In the vastness of the forest it had started to feel lonely however, with nothing but the trees for company, and so when the two of them had come across each other by surprise, they fell into step without saying much of anything. Both of them had been in pursuit of summer prey, caribou in particular, but after coming across more than one set of tracks that clearly belonged to a cougar, an unspoken agreement passed between the two of them. Instead of the caribou, they would begin hunting this cougar. Kamik took the lead, stepping ahead of Ino, silently asserting his dominance over the sphinx in a non-aggressive manner. Tracking the cougar was not difficult for the most  part, the marks its paws left in the grasses and dirt of the forest floor obvious and easy to follow. The creature seemed to have no fear of being pursued, being a predator itself. As Kamik started to climb a pile of light gray stones, Ino paused and lifted his head, inhaling deeply. The scent of the cougar flooded into his nose.
